It has been announced that Raphael Selbourne has been shortlisted for the 2010 McKitterick Prize for his debut novel Beauty.

Raphael Selbourne has attracted much praise for his novel’s compelling portrayal of a Bangladeshi girl living in inner-city Wolverhampton, and the novel was awarded the Costa First Novel Award earlier this year. Beauty has also recently been long-listed for this year’s Desmond Elliott Prize, alongside Maria Allen’s novel Before the Earthquake – an evocative historical mystery set in southern Italy at the turn of the last century.

The McKitterick Prize, run by The Society of Authors, is awarded to the best novel written by a debut author over the age of 40, and was endowed by the late Tom McKitterick. The winner of the £4000 prize will be announced on the 15th June.
