The author of Beauty, Raphael Selbourne, will be appearing and discussing his favourite pieces of art at the Ikon Gallery as part of a series of talks entitled, These are a few of my favourite things.

In the series, a number of well-known individuals undertake a season of talks inspired by ‘Desert Island Discs’. Asked to select their eight favourite works of art, speakers will reveal their personal inspirations, illustrated by a slide show.

Other speakers in the series include Tindal Street author Anthony Cartwright and writer and Guardian columnist Lynsey Hanley.

Raphael achieved great success with his debut novel – a compelling portrayal of a Bangladeshi girl living in inner-city Wolverhampton – attracting both high praise and prize-listings. In January Beauty won the the 2009 Costa First Novel Award; more recently, Raphael was awarded the 2010 McKitterick Prize.

Raphael’s event takes place on 4 August at 6.30pm. Though tickets are free, they do need to be reserved beforehand by visiting the Ikon Gallery or telephoning on 0121 248 0708. More information about These are a few of my favourite things can be found on the Ikon website.
